Bruce Lee vs Me

2.

Bruce Lee is back with a vengeance.
My once good friend in life, fellow sparring partner and martial arts legend has returned to the cultural scenery through the 2008-9 openings of a 40-episode biopic miniseries, a Broadway show, a remake of “Enter the Dragon,” and the creation of a theme park. And news about these events is once again stirring the pot of inquiry and controversy about him, like before his sudden and unfortunate 1973 death at the young age of 32.
"The Legend of Bruce Lee" which is being filmed in China, Hong Kong and the U.S. and contains an international cast, is poised to deliver a fitting veneration to the kung fu king of screen. This television biography might contain fictionalized episodes, but it will resurrect Bruce’s person hood and talents before a whole new generation. It stars Chan Kwok-kwan, who has an uncanny resemblance to Lee, bust whose greatest challenge remains to convince the viewing audience of his mastery of martial arts with only a dancing background.
Equally entertaining will be the Warner Bros. remake of the 1973 classic, “Enter the Dragon.” The new film will be titled, "Awaken the Dragon" It will loosely follow the original, which tracks an FBI agent who investigates a Shaolin Monk and underground kung-fu fighting clubs. Still unanswered, however, is "Who will(or can) play Lee's character"
I don’t imagine Bruce could have ever imagined himself on Broadway, but composer and Tony Award nominee,David Yazbek is placing him front and center stage through his scores in an upcoming musical based upon Lee’s life.
And in southeast China there is even a $29 million theme park being erected in Bruce’s honor, which will include a martial arts academy and a memorial hall. And just in time with world’s spotlight on the Beijing Olympics.
The question of questions
With the mania over this iconoclastic giant, curiosity is once again knocking on even my doorstep. What was Bruce Lee like? How did you meet? What was it like to choreograph the fight scene in Rome with him? Did you spend much time together off screen? These are a small sampling of the inquiries I’m often asked wherever I go around the world.
However, the question probably most asked of me is: Do you think you could have beaten Bruce Lee in a professional competition?
Many have opined about the answer. Some even indicted what I haven’t said. For example, contrary to the Toronto Star’s recent report, I have not admitted that I “would be no match for Lee in a real fight.”

A genius and champion
The truth is Lee was a formidable opponent with a chiseled physique and technique. I totally enjoyed sparring and just spending time with him. He was as charismatic and friendly in the ring and at home, as he was on film. His confidence and wit were dazzling, and sometimes even debilitating to others. Saying things to others like, “A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard.”
Lee was lightening fast, very agile and incredibly strong for his size. He was also a master marketer – a fact demonstrated by his ability to talk the world karate champion at the time (me) into being defeated on screen!
However, many today don’t realize he never competed professionally. If he had, I believe he would have been a world champion. Rather, his fame was crowned with the Green Hornet television series. He was then immortalized with such movies as “Enter the Dragon” and “Return of the Dragon,” in which Lee and I fought in the now famous fighting sequence in the  Roman Colosseum
I enjoy speaking about my friendship with Bruce. It is something about which many don’t know. As I travel the world, it seems that younger people identify me merely with some of the folklore in the Chuck Norris Facts – those hyperbolic sayings that elevate my abilities beyond my capabilities. Others view me in light of the character I played in “Walker, Texas Ranger” or in one of my 20 tough-guy films. But, prior to my film and television career, not everyone realized that I was the six-time world champion back then. From 1964 to 1968, I won many state, national and international amateur karate titles. In 1968, I fought and won the World Professional Middleweight Karate championship by defeating the world’s top fighters. I then held that title until 1974, when I retired undefeated.
What I taught him – what he taught me
Bruce Lee learned from everybody. He had a very open mind. He never believed in only one martial arts style, or that one was superior. He believed that everything had strengths and weaknesses, and that we should find the strengths in each method. He worked out with me, as well as Joe Lewis and Mike Stone. He ascertained skills from all of us, as we learned also from him. And, in doing so, he added it to his repertoire of techniques, as we all did.
When I first started working out with Bruce, he only believed in kicking below the waist, from his training in Wing Chun. I encouraged him not to limit himself and at least develop the ability to kick high, whether he used it or not. I started to do my spinning heel kicks and hitting the pads. Then Bruce started doing it. In six months he could kick as well as anyone.
It’s strange to look back on those days. They seem so near, yet so far away. It’s difficult to believe that it has been 35 years since that martial arts legend left this earth. I miss my friend. I know many of you do too. I hope all the endeavors to memorialize his greatness are successful.
Penalty point for passivity?
Enough stalling! As in my new fighting federation, the World Combat League which we are hoping will be seen in 100 countries during the second season there are penalties for passivity.
So would I have beaten Bruce Lee in a real competition, or not? You’ll forgive me for answering with another Bruce-ism, “Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory.”

Grand master Johnny Pachivas

Grand Master John Pachivas, Shuri-Ryu master

The following article was taken from: All About Martial Arts

John Pachivas Shuri-ryu karate-do

1
John Pachivas Shuri RyuHanshi John Pachivas was a 10th degree Black Belt and the highest ranking person in Shuri-ryu karate-do. He was born on May 3, 1926 and began teaching karate to the general public in the early 1950’s. He was considered the Father of Karate in Florida.
Under Hanshi John Pachivas traditional karate grew as his leadership supported authentic, traditional karate and he promoted  tournaments that brought Florida Karate-ka to national prominence. He was named “Coach of the Year” 6 times and traveled around the world as an Ambassador of Karate.
During Hanshi Pachivas’s competition days he was feared for his speed and power. Usually fighting from a cat stance he would use both roundhouse and front kicks with his incredible hand speed.
In 1963 Grand Master Rober Trias invited him to the Hombu Dojo in Phoenix, Arizona. This would begin a special relationship that lasted for the next 25 years. Hanshi Pachivas was one of just a few to be personally chosen by O’Sensei Trias to be a member of the Trias International Society.
Hanshi John Pachivas had many accomplishments, but the most important to him was the success of his students. Three of his students became members of the Elite Trias International Society. They were Ridgely Abele, Twice World Kata Champion, Andy Horne, and Lori Clapper. Society members are selected on the basis of accomplishment, ability, knowledge, competitive spirit and sincere dedication to the dissemination of true Karatedo. Another of Hanshi Pachivas students who deserves special mention is Donna Judge. Miss Judge is a eleven time USKA Woman’s Black Belt World Champion.
Under Grandmaster Trias, Hanshi John Pachivas received the highest title within the organization. He was a Chief Instructor and Director of the United States Karate Association International.
John PachivasHanshi John Pachivas also held a 6th Dan in in Jujitsu and a 5th Dan in Judo. Hanshi Pachivas provided training of authentic Karate and Sport Karate for over 40 years. He was concerned with the total development of the individual.
Hanshi John Pachivas often counseled Karate-ka on the importance of being free from any prejudice, and he considered that doing your best made a martial artist a real winner. Hanshi Pachivas believed that Karate develops character and integrity and provided all the insight necessary for a successful life. He often reminded students that hard physical training never stops.
Devil Rider PosterIn 1970, as Johnny Pachivas,  John played himself, a karate trainer, in the film Devil Rider along with his student Ridgely Abele who starred in the film. Devil Rider was about a young rebellious girl who hooks up with a biker gang forcing her mother to hire a private detective to find her and bring her back. The detective goes undercover as a biker to search for her.

Sadly, Hanshi John Pachivas died of respiratory failure at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida on February 14, 2000. He was only 72 years old.

Michael Jai White apologizes to Bruce Lee

Michael Jai White apologizes for disrespecting the late Bruce Lee

I have a great admiration for both the acting talent, as well as the martial arts
ability of Michael Jai White, but i struggle with a recent post that he made.

Most know that he made a statement about being able to beat Bruce Lee, based
on their weight difference, and i do understand, but i felt it a bit arrogant.

Here recently, he sort of recanted his statement, offering an apology to the late star.
So what is your opinion on this subject? Please leave your comment or feedback.

Note: the following article/was taken from a Facebook post...

The Real Michael Jai White

hing so much in my life! I'm sorry to have seemingly disrespected Bruce Lee, the greatest Martial Artist in the world who's not only my hero but the very reason Martial Arts still exist on this level today. I shouldn't have said it. How I'd talk to professional fighters should be different to how I'd talk to non-fighters on the radio. While there isn't a professional fighter who'd disagree with the thought of a 100lb difference between two pro fighters being a massive advantage, the regular public, influenced by years of movies and fight scenes depicting "David over Goliath" would have a tough time digesting this. In the real world, even a 20lb difference is a huge advantage to the larger fighter especially if the skill levels are similar. To think of Mayweather (the most advanced boxer ever) beating Tyson would bring pro fighters to laughter and I'm sure Tyson would agree. Even though, in the history of fighting, no one has ever seen any record of a 125lb fighter beating a 230lb fighter in the ring. (Jiu Jitsu cases being the closest) I thought this was a case in common sense. But media is more powerful than I ever though, hell, I benefit from this perception myself and although most haven't seen me really fight, I'm perceived as a real fighter because of the movies. In reality I've been fighting competitively well before I was an actor, sparred and trained with Pro fighters all my life and while there is still no one in MMA I can't prove myself worthy to go rounds with even today, I still shouldn't have said what I said in mixed company. While I (arrogantly in my own opinion) wanted to point out an interesting fact about reality vs film, I did so with the unintended perception that I was considering myself superior to Bruce Lee WHICH COULDN'T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! I apologize from the bottom of my heart to all those who thought I'd meant to disrespect Bruce Lee. That was never my intention. I apologized to Lee in person earlier this year and this is my personal apology to all of you- Michael Jai White

Cincinnati Ohio Mayor proclaims July 15 as "Bruce Lee Day"

JULY 15TH, 2017 IS "BRUCE LEE DAY" IN CINCINNATI

It was 46 years ago, yes long years at that, when i first started my martial arts journey.
I had an uncle that fought in the Korean War, he studied combat Ju-jitsu, and he was
my first unofficial teacher.

One day in i was watching television, i saw a commercial advertising a new movie
with a exciting martial artist and actor. That actor and man was none other than Bruce Lee.

I had seen the television show Green Hornet, and i enjoyed him in the role of 'Kato',
but i did not make the correlation. No i didn't know it was the same man until
later. Once i put the pieces together, i had an even deeper appreciation for him.

My new idol(at the time) was born who later became my mentor. I never personally
met Bruce Lee while i was a child, and he died so suddenly, this actually impacted me
deeply because it felt as if i lost a brother.

Bruce Lee gave a new meaning to martial arts and it is evident by the impact that he
has left, not only in the martial arts, but in the whole world.

You could never mention martial arts without mentioning Bruce Lee, because
he was not only responsible for elevating the consciousness of martial arts, but also
in bringing about a greater relationship between the US and China, which was strained
during the sixties and seventies.

Now when you go seeking a school of martial arts, you will find not only multitudes
of Asian martial arts instructors, but just as many American instructors.
This all came to be by the man known as the 'Little Dragon', Bruce Lee.

I am so proud to be a martial artist, for it has taught me a great deal about myself as
well as life, and i owe much of my self development to the arts. It is for this reason
i decided to honor Bruce Lee for that second time in the month of my birthday, and
also the same month of the anniversary of his death.

UFC champ Conor McGregor will Defeat Floyd Mayweather in August

Conor McGregor will smash Boxing champ Floyd Mayweather

Yes, it has been talked about, and a long time coming, but now it is final, Floyd 'Money Maker'
Mayweather and UFC phenom, Conor McGregor will fight in August.

I have heard it said, this is about the money, and simply a publicity stunt. In other words
everyone knows Mayweather will win,but this is part of a public campaign to make him
and Dana White along with others more rich. Well, we shall see, but i am banking
on Conor to upset what everyone else is thinking impossible, and that is a win.

Grand master Edward Brown and a moment of reflection

 Ed Brown
One of my dear friends and also a Okinawan karate Instructor.
Grand Master Brown was taught the art of Shuri Ryu Karate under the late great
Grand Master Johnny Lee Jelks. He was one of Jelks most prized students, Master Jelks
told me that himself. Grand master Jelks was a very humble man, and as Brown has said
"He taught me everything i know"

This couldn't be any more true, because Brown over the past few decades has won virtually
every Karate tournament in both Men's black belt sparring and Kata divisions. He is
truly disciplined and i am really proud to have known him most of my martial arts career.

Heads up Karateka!! Because Grand Master Ed Brown is definitely someone to behold.

Here with his lovely and devoted partner Lauren

In Memory of Martial Arts Master Jim Kelly

In Memory of Jim Kelly

Remember this iconic scene of Kelly from 'Three the Hard Way'
when he says to cop 'Gonna Set Me Up?' Ouuuuuuey
Now this was classic Jim Kelly at his best...enjoy

Jim 'The Dragon' Kelly, is what he came to be known as, for his role alongside the
legendary dragon...Bruce Lee.

Jim Kelly's life has been shrouded with mystery to me, because i only knew of him
from the action films that he appeared in during the seventies.

I knew very little of his life off the screen, other than the fact that he was an avid
tennis player, athlete, and he lived in Paris Kentucky, not too far from me in Ohio.

As a black martial artist, i, along with many others found ourselves identifying with
great martial arts masters of the big screen, such a Jim Kelly, Ron Van Clief, Carl
Scott, and several others.

I grew to respect the person of Jim Kelly much more over the years, especially how
honest and wholesome of a man he was. He was one of a few known black
martial artist that truly respected the skill and talent of the late Bruce Lee, and
it is well documented .  I thank him for his contributions to the arts and to humanity.

Other than Enter the Dragon, Jim appeared in his own body of works as well, such as
Black Belt Jones,Black Samurai, Hot Potato, One Down Two to Go, and we
,can't forget Three the Hard Way

Sonny Chiba in the Street Fighter

Sonny Chiba in fight scene from the movie Street Fighter

Sonny Chiba (Shinichi Chiba) was one of the most prolific martial arts personalities
of the seventies alongside Bruce Lee. He was is one of my most favorite film fighters.
I have seen virtually all of his body of work, especially Street Fighter, Return of the
Street Fighter, Body Guard and The Killing Machine. These were his original hits, and
i was sitting glued to the theatre screen when they played. He is truly a legend, not to
mention, that one of his instructors were the legendary Mas Oyama. Enough Said.
